Root Canals, Cavities, and Hashimoto’s: What Your Dentist Isn’t Telling You with Dr. Michelle Jorgensen

Hidden Dental Infections and Your Thyroid Health

The Case:
• Cindy is managing Hashimoto’s with a clean diet and lifestyle changes
• Despite this, she still experiences fatigue, anxiety, brain fog, and food sensitivities
• She’s tried numerous supplements, followed strict diets, and worked with several practitioners without results

I suspected a less obvious root cause, something that hasn’t been explored. I looked at her dental history, including investigating if there were any materials in her mouth that could be causing a hidden infection contributing to her symptoms.

When the Mouth Holds the Clues to Thyroid Health

In this episode, I’m joined by functional dentist Dr. Michelle Jorgensen, to help me explore how oral health is often the missing piece in cases like Cindy’s.

Dr. Jorgensen is a traditionally trained dentist who had to change the way she practiced after facing her own major health issues that stemmed from toxic materials and practices used in conventional dentistry. Now she helps people understand the connection between dental health and whole-body health, especially when it comes to autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s.

Dental Triggers That Could Be Sabotaging Your Healing

Dr. Jorgensen explained that common dental issues can become hidden sources of inflammation and immune activation, especially for people with thyroid conditions. These include:

  • Root canals: These can harbor bacteria that the immune system is constantly reacting to.
  • Cavitations: Hidden infections can happen in areas where teeth have been removed.
  • Metal fillings and crowns: A variety of different potentially problematic materials have been used over time, especially if there’s a mixture of metals that can disrupt cellular communication.
  • Mouth breathing: Many don’t think about how this can affect the oral microbiome and even immune regulation.

Dr. Jorgensen explained how these issues can create a state of chronic inflammation, drain the body’s resources, and even lead to persistent food sensitivities without any clue that the mouth is the origin.

Why “Healthy” Teeth Aren’t Always Healthy

One of my biggest takeaways was that you can have “perfect” teeth on your X-rays and still have major hidden problems. Dr. Jorgensen shared that most cavities, for example, don’t show up on traditional X-rays and often go undetected by conventional dentists. But they can quietly fuel autoimmune flares and other health challenges for years.

She also emphasized the importance of the oral microbiome, and how things like fluoride, antibacterial rinses, and aggressive dental treatments can disrupt it. This can lead to imbalances that affect digestion, mood, and even thyroid function.

How Cindy Found Relief for Her Brain Fog and Fatigue

Once we uncovered the possible dental contributors in Cindy’s case, we had her work with a biological dentist to safely remove and address the problematic dental materials. We also supported her body’s detox pathways and added in nervous system work to reduce stress around the dental procedures. Within a short time, her food sensitivities decreased, her energy improved, and her brain fog started to lift.

This was such an important reminder that healing often requires us to look beyond the obvious, and to be open to exploring areas of the body we don’t usually think about.

Is Your Oral Health Behind Your Hashimoto’s Symptoms?

If you’ve been struggling with unresolved Hashimoto’s symptoms and suspect your dental work could be a factor, Dr. Jorgensen suggests:

  • Looking for a functional or biological dentist who understands the connection between oral and systemic health
  • Avoiding fluoride and antibacterial mouthwashes
  • Supporting your oral microbiome with proper nutrition and gentle oral care
  • Asking questions about any upcoming dental procedures and materials being used

She also recommends testing options like cone beam CT scans, which can reveal infections or cavities that traditional X-rays can’t catch.

This episode might just open up a whole new perspective on your healing journey.
