When Food Isn’t Medicine: Thyroid and Hormone Truths with Emily Sadri

What to do When Clean Living Isn’t Working

The Case:

  • Janet is in perimenopause and experiencing fatigue, weight gain, brain fog, and significant hair loss.
  • Diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism, she resisted medication, preferring natural solutions.
  • She’s doing ‘all the right things’ including avoiding toxins while prioritizing yoga, meditation, and energy work—but her symptoms persisted.

The Investigation:

Janet’s story is one I hear often—someone deeply committed to a natural lifestyle, doing everything “right,” yet still feeling far from their best. When her doctor prescribed Synthroid, she felt like her body had let her down. She thought, ‘How can I be struggling when I’m living so cleanly?’

To help unravel the complex connection between thyroid health, hormones, and natural living, I invited my dear friend and hormone expert, Emily Sadri, to join me on this episode. Emily is a nurse practitioner specializing in women’s hormones and hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and she brought her wealth of knowledge to our discussion.

We explored the delicate balance between natural interventions and the need for medical support, especially when it comes to hormones to see if we could figure out the root cause of Janet’s issues.

Reframing Hormones: Why Accepting Support Isn’t Failure

A recurring theme in cases like Janet’s is a reluctance to embrace hormonal or thyroid support, often rooted in the belief that it means “failing” at natural health. But as Emily explained, hormones like thyroid and estrogen aren’t just optional—they’re essential for optimal health.

Emily explained that when your body doesn’t produce enough hormones, it’s like asking a car to drive without gas. I love that analogy and she continued to explain that someone could have the cleanest engine and the best tires, but without fuel, they’re not going anywhere.

Supporting your body with what it needs—whether it’s nutrients, supplements, or hormones—isn’t a failure. It’s a way to honor your body and help it heal.

Understanding the Hormone-Thyroid Connection

Emily and I discussed how hormones and thyroid health are intricately linked and how imbalances in one area can ripple across the body. Emily shared a few examples of how hypothyroidism (and therefore Hashimoto’s) can trigger additional health issues.

1. Thyroid Health Affects Gut Health

When thyroid hormones are low, they can weaken the gut lining, explained Emily. This means even the best probiotics or gut-healing protocols won’t work unless thyroid function is addressed.

2. Hormonal Decline and Thyroid Imbalances Go Hand in Hand

As women age, estrogen and progesterone naturally decline, particularly during perimenopause. Emily noted that this decline can accelerate thyroid dysfunction, creating a feedback loop where both areas worsen simultaneously.

3. Optimizing Hormones Is More Than Symptom Management

Hormones like estrogen and progesterone do more than regulate cycles—they impact brain function, bone density, metabolism, and even skin health. Supporting hormones isn’t just about alleviating symptoms; it’s about ensuring your body functions optimally.

The Impact of Declining Hormones

One of the key takeaways from our conversation was how declining hormones affect the entire body.

For example, Emily shared that a lack of estrogen impacts brain function, mitochondrial health, and even insulin sensitivity. Over time, these changes can lead to persistent fatigue, weight gain, and brain fog.

This slow decline often goes unnoticed until symptoms become severe, but Emily emphasized the importance of addressing hormone imbalances early to prevent long-term issues.

A Balanced Approach to Healing

At the end of our discussion, Emily and I reflected on how integrating natural and medical solutions can lead to transformative results. While lifestyle changes are foundational, there are times when hormonal or thyroid support is necessary to bring the body back into balance. This would prove to be the key in Janet’s case.

Mystery Solved: Blending Natural Solutions with Medical Hormone Support

There’s so much to consider when it comes to thyroid and hormone health. Everyone’s situation is unique, and the key to success is understanding exactly where you are and what your body needs.

For Janet, the key to unlocking her health was embracing a balanced approach. After working with her doctor and using the insights from my Thyroid Mystery Solved program, we discovered:

  • Her TSH levels were elevated, and her thyroid hormones were low. While not every case of high TSH necessitates medication, it depends on the thyroid type and even the subtype. Janet fell into the high TSH category but also had a specific subtype that indicated she required additional support.
  • Her situation called for something beyond the Synthroid she was initially prescribed. Working with her doctor, we identified the right medication tailored to her needs while supporting her Hashimoto’s triggers naturally.

Janet’s journey wasn’t just about thyroid health. While she was committed to eating well and following all the right practices, she still had several key triggers that needed to be addressed. For Janet, these included Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Candida, and emotional trauma. These triggers were significant contributors to her symptoms, and by addressing them, we could create a clearer path to recovery. Since everyone’s triggers are different, we dove into these areas in detail, using the personalized options within the Thyroid Mystery Solved program to uncover what was impacting her health.

Hormonal Clarity and the Mira Analyzer

Another crucial piece of Janet’s health puzzle came to light when she started tracking her hormone levels with the Mira Analyzer. Even though she was still cycling regularly, we discovered that both her estrogen and progesterone levels were lower than optimal—a finding that surprised her. Many women don’t realize that hormones can begin to decline well before menopause, but this drop can have a profound effect on energy, clarity, and overall well-being.

Janet began hormone support to address these deficiencies, complementing the work we were already doing with her thyroid.

The Transformation

If Janet’s story resonates with you or someone you know, please share this episode. Remember, the answers to your health mysteries are out there, and with the right guidance, there is hope for healing.

For Janet, the key to unlocking her health was embracing a balanced approach. After working with her doctor and using the insights from my Thyroid Mystery Solved program, here’s what we discovered:

  • Janet’s TSH levels were high, and her thyroid hormone levels were low—indicating that thyroid support was necessary.
  • She also had lower-than-optimal levels of estrogen and progesterone, a common issue for women in perimenopause.

Happy Ending: Weight Loss, Hair Regrowth, and Mental Clarity

By integrating the right thyroid medication, hormone support, and targeted natural interventions, Janet experienced a profound transformation. Within 3 months, she experienced incredible progress:

  • Her energy returned, and her brain fog disappeared.
  • She lost 10 pounds without changing her already-clean diet.
  • Her hair stopped falling out—and started growing back thicker than before.

Janet was thrilled with the transformation—and so was I. Watching her regain her vitality and confidence was a powerful reminder of why it’s so important to address all aspects of health, from thyroid function to hormone balance, and even the deeper triggers that may go unnoticed.
