The Case:
- Loni has Hashimoto’s and has a history of toxic exposures, including amalgam fillings, conventional beauty products, and plastic water bottles.
- She was experiencing fatigue, stress, and feeling overwhelmed despite her efforts to heal.
- She tried a juice cleanse, parasite cleanse, and a heavy metal detox, but instead of feeling better, her symptoms worsened.
Many people with Hashimoto’s understand that toxins can be a trigger for their condition. But in an effort to “cleanse” the body, they may unknowingly overload their detox pathways, leading to more harm than good. That was exactly what I suspected when I met Loni.
The Investigation
I knew that blocked detox pathways and adrenal stress were a big part of Loni’s issues. I invited my colleague and friend, Dr. Izabella Wentz (AKA The Thyroid Pharmacist) to join me on the podcast. She’s a bestselling author and, like me, she is so passionate about getting to the root cause of thyroid related issues. I knew she was the best person to discuss Loni’s case, explore why aggressive detoxing can backfire, and how those with Hashimoto’s can support detox pathways in a way that works with your body, not against it.
The Hidden Risks of Over-Detoxing with Hashimoto’s
Detoxing is essential for health (especially for those with Hashimoto’s) but too much, too fast can be overwhelming. This is because of blocked detox pathways. If toxins are mobilized but can’t be properly eliminated, they recirculate, triggering more inflammation and worsening symptoms.
Some key signs of over-detoxing include:
- Extreme fatigue
- Brain fog and headaches
- Skin reactions (rashes, acne, or irritation)
- Worsening Hashimoto’s symptoms
- Digestive distress (bloating, constipation, or diarrhea)
Loni was experiencing all of these. When I reviewed her case, I saw blocks in her detox pathways, sluggish bile flow, and stressed adrenals—all preventing her body from properly eliminating toxins.
Why Your Liver Needs Support Before Detoxing
Dr. Izabella and I discussed how the liver is your body’s primary detox organ, but for detox to work efficiently, three elimination pathways must be open:
- Bowel movements: Constipation means toxins aren’t being excreted.
- Bile flow: Poor bile flow leads to toxins being recirculated rather than eliminated.
- Sweating: If you’re not sweating, your body is holding onto toxins rather than excreting them.
In Loni’s case, her bile was stagnant, and her bowels weren’t moving properly. This meant that even though she was “detoxing,” the toxins had nowhere to go, leading to worsening symptoms.
To fix this, we first focused on opening detox pathways by:
- Using Magnesium Citrate to improve bowel regularity.
- Supporting bile flow with bitter herbs (Bitter X from Quicksilver) and TUDCA (from CellCore).
- Introducing binders (like CellCore’s Biotoxin Binder) to help remove toxins from circulation.
Within four weeks of focusing on these foundational steps, Loni felt so much better and that was before starting a deeper detox.
The Adrenal-Thyroid Connection: Why “Pushing Through” Doesn’t Work
Loni had another challenge—she was always on the go, constantly checking things off her list. While this mindset can be great for getting things done, it can also lead to adrenal burnout.
Dr. Wentz explained that stress is one of the biggest triggers for adrenal dysfunction. When the adrenal glands are overworked, they struggle to produce enough cortisol, which plays a key role in inflammation control, blood sugar balance, and thyroid function.
Some signs of adrenal fatigue include:
- Difficulty waking up in the morning
- Energy crashes in the afternoon
- Feeling “wired but tired” at night
- Salt cravings
- Increased anxiety or irritability
- Sensitivity to bright lights and loud noises
For Loni, we focused on simple adrenal support strategies, including:
- Daily breathwork exercises (just 3–5 minutes per day)
- Proper light exposure (morning sunlight and reducing blue light at night)
- Herbal adaptogens like ashwagandha and rhodiola
- Adrenal Response supplement (from Innate) for gentle, non-stimulating support
Slowing down was the hardest part for Loni, but once she committed, she noticed better sleep, steadier energy, and even a reduction in Hashimoto’s antibodies.
How Gentle Detox & Adrenal Support Can Lower Hashimoto’s Antibodies
By focusing on the foundations first (rather than jumping into aggressive detoxes) Loni saw incredible improvements in just six weeks:
- More energy throughout the day
- Improved sleep and less “wired but tired” feelings
