Our Approach to Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

What is Hashimoto’s disease?

A Hashimoto’s diagnosis can come with many mixed emotions. On one hand there is finally a reason behind your many frustrating and often debilitating symptoms, but on the other hand you are probably feeling lost, confused and overwhelmed and you are likely wondering if your life will ever really be the same again.

I get so many questions from my community like, Can I lose weight? Can I have balanced hormones? Can I ever get my energy back? Can I ever get rid of my brain fog? Can my hair ever grow and be thick again? Can my digestive issues resolve? Can I still get pregnant with Hashimoto’s? Why do my loved ones have such a hard time understanding what I am feeling? They keep telling me that I don’t “look” sick but I just don’t feel like myself.

I am here to tell you that as mysterious as many of the symptoms may seem and may be, there is nothing that you can’t do with hashimoto’s disease when you approach it from the right angles.

What you need to know about Hashimoto’s being an Autoimmune Disease

One of the most fundamental things that is imperative to understand when it comes to Hashimoto’s is that Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease. Therefore it is a disease of the immune system and not a disease of the thyroid.

In Hashimoto’s, the thyroid is being destroyed by the immune system. It is not the thyroid fault it is being attacked, the thyroid is just an innocent bystander. It’s the immune system’s fault so to speak, for getting confused and attacking your own tissues.

Overtime, Hashimoto’s leads to hypothyroidism. In fact, it is estimated that over 80% of those with Hypothyroidism actually have Hashimoto’s. It is the immune system’s destruction of the thyroid gland that is the leading cause of Hypothyroidism. This is why it is very unfortunate that Hashimoto’s is not always tested right away so hundreds of thousands of people who have hypothyroidism don’t realize why it is happening.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Symptoms

  • Fatigue
  • Weight Gain
  • Constipation
  • Dry Skin
  • Joint Stiffness and Muscle Pain
  • Brittle Hair / Slow Hair Growth
  • Depression
  • Puffy Eyes
  • Heavy Periods
  • Memory Problems
  • Brain fog
  • Swelling
  • Bloating

The reason many people and even doctor’s don’t think to test for hashimoto’s is because its symptoms often mimic those of other conditions, making it tricky to diagnose. But if you’ve been feeling constantly fatigued, struggling with weight gain despite eating well, experiencing brain fog, or noticing changes in your skin, hair, and nails—these could all be signs of Hashimoto’s.

Many people also experience mood swings, depression, or anxiety, which are often overlooked as thyroid-related issues. Digestive troubles like bloating, constipation, or even food sensitivities can also be part of the picture.

The tricky part is that these symptoms don’t always show up all at once, and they can vary from person to person. But once you start connecting the dots and understanding what’s really going on with your thyroid, it becomes so much easier to manage these symptoms and start feeling like yourself again.
How Serious is Hashimoto’s?

Hashimoto’s can create many symptoms as it damages the thyroid but also, because Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease, the confused immune system can also start to attack other organs, The longer it goes unchecked, the more damage it can cause to your thyroid and overall health. That’s why it’s so crucial to address it when you find out about it and take a comprehensive approach to healing by supporting your immune system—not just to manage the symptoms.

Why Are You Still Suffering With Hashimoto’s Symptoms?

Most people don’t look at Hashimoto’s from a whole body perspective.

So often, people will start thyroid medication and think that they are doing something for Hashimoto’s when in reality, they are just supporting the thyroid.

Of course it is essential to support the thyroid but since the immune system is what is attacking the thyroid, we want to make sure that we also support the immune system so that we can slow down and even stop the thyroid attack.

How Do We Stop The Thyroid From Being Attacked

In order to slow down and stop the attack, we have to look at why the immune system got confused and started to attack the thyroid in the first place.

There are various reasons which I call “triggers” that create this immune confusion and it starts to see your thyroid as a foe and not your friend therefore creating this attack.

Identifying and supporting these “triggers” which tend to be individual for each of us, is the way that we can slow down and even stop the attack. By addressing Hashimoto’s from a whole body perspective we can get to your root or roots and this is how you can finally lose weight, get your energy back, think clearly and fight inflammation.

Hashimoto’s And Diet

One of the first ways to help Hashimoto’s is through diet. What you choose to eat can either support your healing journey or trigger a flare-up in symptoms. For many with Hashimoto’s, certain foods ( like gluten for example) can act as an inflammatory trigger, making symptoms worse and contributing to further immune system confusion.

By identifying and shifting your individual food triggers, you can significantly reduce inflammation, support your thyroid function, and start to feel like yourself again. It’s not just about cutting out foods but also about nourishing your body with nutrient-dense, healing foods that provide the vitamins and minerals your thyroid needs to function optimally.

Triggers For Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

In addition to your diet, other triggers include things like toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, and other chemicals found in our water, food and personal care products. Infections such as EBV, H. Pylori, Candida and many other viruses, parasites and bacteria can also play a huge role as triggers.

Stress can be another trigger and often comes in both physical and emotional form.

In order to truly support Hashimoto’s we want to address the triggers for you.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s body is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. That’s why I always encourage a personalized approach to each trigger.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, know that you don’t have to do this alone—I’m here to guide you every step of the way, helping you make the best dietary choices for your unique body and condition.

When I was first diagnosed with Hashimoto’s at 25 everything was so overwhelming but fast forward to now, I have 2 kids and I had my second at the age of 41 (so take that, the OB that told me I was too old and asked me why I waited so long to have kids).

Now I have good energy and can sustain taking care of my 2 rugrats, a full time practice, my podcast and all of the online Hashimoto’s content and education that I provide supporting thousands of people.

Plus now, I get up earlier, even before the kids to have some self care and downtime. I never ever considered myself a morning person, I just always felt like I was too tired and needed too much sleep but the more my body balanced, the more I was able to do while still feeling good doing it. My hair is actually growing past my shoulders and sheds way less and I have clear skin which I never did when I was first diagnosed.

If you have Hashimoto’s and you are struggling with weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, hair loss or any other frustrating symptoms, I am here to help!
