Beth Mosher and Inna Topiler Share Real-Life Stories of Healing Stubborn Symptoms and Helping People Feel Good Again

In this episode of Thyroid Mystery Solved we are exploring four real cases going from problem to transformation – all with amazing results.

Beth Mosher, my trusted partner in tackling health mysteries, joins me to share these four powerful cases that reveal how targeted, functional approaches can turn even the most stubborn symptoms into successful health stories. Each case is an example of the potential for meaningful transformation—when we understand the root causes and tailor solutions to individual needs.

Resolving Chronic Nerve Pain with an Anti-Inflammatory Diet and Meal Timing

The Case: Persistent Nerve Pain Impacting Quality of Life

  • A mid-60s man dealing with intense, episodic nerve pain for over 4 years.
  • Pain radiated from his back to his lower body forcing him to lie down
  • Despite seeing various specialists and “eating well” but only experienced partial relief
  • The only way to deal with the pain was with medication

Key Insights: Chronic Inflammation as a Trigger for Episodic Pain
Beth identified that episodic pain like his often stems from multiple inflammation sources. His diet included foods that heightened inflammation, like caffeine, dairy, and eating meals irregularly, all of which impacted his pain receptors. Beth also had him do a comprehensive stool test (GI Map) and was able to determine that he had a large amount of dysbiotic bacteria. She knew that the gut imbalance was impacting his immune system and contributing to inflammation. An organic acids test revealed that he had an upregulation that affected his pain receptors.

Customized Approach: Diet Adjustments to Manage Inflammation
By timing and balancing his meals, removing high-inflammatory foods, and reducing FODMAPs like onions and garlic, he experienced fewer pain episodes, less gas and bloating, and reduced digestive discomfort. After a few weeks,  his pain was under control.

Managing Chronic IBS and Gut Inflammation Through Dietary Adjustments

  • Case Overview: Long-Term Digestive Issues Despite Clean Diet
A 45-year-old woman former gymnast had been enduring digestive issues for two decades.
  • She had hyperglycemia and had been diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) which caused her to skip meals during busy days.
  • Several scans and doctor consultations but they were unable to find anything wrong.
  • Frequently experienced pain that required emergency room visits.

Key Insights: Blood Sugar Instability and Detox Challenges
Her high bilirubin levels indicated an issue with the liver. Beth determined that the client had a detox impairment, likely from a diet that included sulfite-rich iced tea and the frequent, extended periods of stress as a result of the busy lifestyle. Beth noted her blood sugar was also unstable, which compounded her stress and digestive symptoms.

Customized Approach: Replacing Sulfite-Rich Foods and Stabilizing Blood Sugar
Replacing her tea with herbal alternatives, balancing and timing her meals, and reducing hard-to-digest foods led to a significant improvement within three weeks. Beth also discovered some foods that she wasn’t tolerating and removed these from her diet as well as supporting her sleep. This personalized approach showed how diet changes could ease even persistent IBS symptoms. Her pain issues were solved through these lifestyle and diet shifts.

Supporting Weight Loss with Hormone Balance and Liver Detox

The Case: Menopause-Related Weight Gain and Chronic Stress

  • A 52-year-old woman faced substantial weight gain, chronic stress, and hormonal imbalances post-menopause.
  • She had a history of diverticulitis (inflammatory bowel disease), gallstones, a hernia, and scarring on her liver.
  • She’d tried traditional diet approaches without success.

Key Insights: Hormone Imbalance and Detox Support Needs
Beth did a blood test, a stool test, and a DUTCH test. Testing revealed an MTHFR mutation and a liver detoxification impairment. She also had low estrogen, common in post-menopausal women. While she tried to follow the suggested diets, stress made it difficult, impacting her ability to lose weight effectively.

Customized Approach: Liver Support and Targeted Detox with Dietary Cleansing
Beth introduced a regimen of supplements and encouraged daily exercise. She also helped her with sleep and stress reduction by introducing visualization and breathing exercises. Weight was starting to come off but not at a rate that the client was happy with so the next step was a 21-day standard process cleanse to support detoxification and speed up the metabolism. These changes resulted in a decrease in stress and weight loss—ultimately over 50 pounds—and she feels great.

Reducing Extreme Fatigue by Balancing Glutamate and GABA Levels

The Case: Severe Fatigue and Mobility Issues in a Young Woman

  • Gina is a woman in her late 20s dealing with extreme fatigue that led to her inability to walk.
  • Struggles with anxiety, chronic exhaustion and brain fog forced her to drop out of school.
  • She had previously taken Lithium and other medication to treat her depression.
  • She was currently treating her dysregulated thyroid (a side effect of the Lithium) with Tirosent.
  • She was also experiencing digestive issues which caused her to eat cautiously.

Key Insights: Imbalanced Neurotransmitters Aggravated by Diet
Beth identified that her body struggled to convert glutamate (a stimulating neurotransmitter) into GABA (a calming one), causing nervous system overstimulation and compounding her fatigue. This was exacerbated by her previous exposure to Lithium and a carb-heavy diet with wheat (which contains glutamate).

Customized Approach: Low-Glutamate Diet and Meal Timing for Stable Energy
Switching to a low-glutamate diet and carefully balancing her meals helped alleviate her fatigue. Over time, she regained energy, resumed work, and rebuilt her life. This case is such a great example of the body’s ability to heal itself. It’s proof that a functional approach can be so much more effective because a traditional approach would have resulted in more medications to treat the symptoms which would have made things worse.

Real Solutions, Real Relief

These cases highlight the importance of looking beyond symptoms to uncover the “why” behind them. Whether it’s meal timing, eliminating specific foods, or supporting detox pathways, individualized solutions can offer relief and restore quality of life. If you’re struggling with persistent symptoms, there’s hope—and Beth and I are here to help.
